A full day tour from Foynes includes Knappogue Castle & Walled
Garden, a tour of Bunratty Castle & Folk Park and a visit to Craggaunowen.
From Moneypoint, the tour travels east through County Clare to
the market town of Ennis and on to the 15th century Bunratty
Castle and adjacent Folk Park, where visitors are
welcomed with home-made scones and morning coffee. Fine-day views from
the top of Bunratty extend to counties Clare, Limerick and Tipperary. Inside
the Castle, an excellent collection of 14th to 18th century furniture,
paintings and wall-hangings vividly convey the atmosphere of life in medieval
times. Durty Nellie's Pub next door dates from the 16th
century.
The extensive Folk Park recreates rural and urban life in 19th
century Victorian Ireland from the poorest one roomed dwelling to Bunratty
House, a fine example of a Georgian residence for the gentry.
At nearby Craggaunowen, visitors can see a
reconstructed crannog, or lake dwelling, and The Brendan, the
leather boat in which explorer Tim Severin crossed the Atlantic Ocean to North
America in 1977 in a bid to prove that a 6th century saint could have made the
same journey.
A lunch stop in Quin near Quin Abbey founded in 1433 provides a
welcome break from touring. Following lunch, the tour takes the short journey
to Knappogue Castle and Walled Garden. Knappogue Castle built
in 1467 by Sean McNamera is a magnificent example of a medieval tower house and
has a long and varied history from a battle field to a dwelling place.
